How to Find a Good Repair Shop After an Accident

The Short Version

  • •After an accident, you have every right to choose your own repair shop, even when the insurance company is paying.

Your car has a crooked bumper and a dent in the left door. You're standing in the parking lot, a little dazed, wondering who you're actually supposed to call. The first repair shop Google suggests? The one your insurance company points you to? Or your friend who "knows a guy"?

The choice of repair shop determines both what the repair costs you and how long your car holds up afterwards. You decide where your car gets repaired, regardless of what the insurance company suggests.

Sort out the paperwork before you call anyone

If the damage involves a collision with another car, filling out the accident report is the first task. Do it while the details are still fresh, ideally together with the other party on the spot. Take photos of both cars, licence plates, and the surrounding situation.

You'll save yourself a lot of arguments later if both parties fill out the same version. With a digital accident report, you and the other party complete the form together and sign digitally, and the insurance company receives an identical version from both of you. No loose papers in the glove box, no "that's not how I remember it."

If you're unsure about liability, loss of no-claims bonus, or your excess — that is, your share of the bill before the insurance covers the rest — check the terms at Finance Norway or your own insurance company. Terms vary between providers.

What kind of job is it, really?

A dent is not just a dent. Bodywork damage can mean anything from tapping out a panel and repainting it, to replacing entire door sections and straightening the frame. If the paint is damaged, the colour must be mixed precisely to your car's colour code, otherwise the repaired area will look like a patch.

Ask the repair shop to explain what the job actually involves. A good shop takes the time to show you what's damaged and why it costs what it costs.

Authorised dealer or independent shop

An authorised dealer knows your Toyota or Volvo inside and out and uses original parts. A good independent repair shop is often cheaper and fully capable, especially for older cars. Getting repairs done at an independent shop does not affect your new car warranty, as long as the work is carried out professionally. This follows from EU rules on the automotive aftermarket, something NAF has written extensively about.

What does it cost?

Prices vary enormously. A door repair with repainting can come in at 8,000 kroner at one shop and 15,000 at another, for what appears to be the same job. The difference lies in the hourly rate, choice of parts, and how much they recommend replacing versus repairing.

What drives the price up:

  • Original parts rather than compatible aftermarket parts
  • High hourly rates in large cities
  • Painting multiple panels to achieve an even colour match
  • Hidden damage that only appears once the part is dismantled

How to get quotes

People tend to accept the first quote they get because it feels like the easiest option. That can cost you thousands.

Instead of calling five repair shops and explaining the damage five times, you can describe it once and request quotes from multiple shops in your area. Attach photos of the damage, the car model, and year. You'll then receive no-obligation quotes back, compare prices, and choose the one that suits you best. Free and with no commitment.

Request quotes from multiple repair shops, and you'll quickly find out who offers the best price for your specific repair.

Check these things before you say yes

  • Do they provide a written quote and time estimate?
  • Do you get a warranty on the work — ideally three years on paintwork?
  • Do they have experience with your car brand?
  • Do they offer a courtesy car or rental car while yours is in the shop?

If the damage is linked to an insurance claim, clarify with your insurer who covers the rental car and how much the excess will be before the work begins.

Don't forget the documentation

Always ask for an itemised invoice showing parts, labour hours, and what was done. It's worth its weight in gold if you ever sell the car, and essential if you later need to make a complaint about the work. If your car is due for a roadworthiness test, a proper repair record can save you from unwanted surprises.

A good repair shop leaves you with two things. A car that looks and drives like it did before. And paperwork you can actually trust.
