What it costs to repair a scratch in your car's paintwork in 2026

The short version

  • •A superficial scratch can be polished out for a couple of hundred kroner, while a deep scratch requiring repainting can easily cost 3,000 to 8,000 kroner per panel.

You come out of the shop, walk towards your car, and see it straight away. A pale streak along the left rear door. Someone opened their car door right into your paintwork in the car park and disappeared.

The first thought is usually the same. What is this going to cost?

The answer ranges from almost nothing to tens of thousands of kroner. It all depends on how deep the scratch has gone.

How deep is the scratch

Car paintwork is built up in layers, a bit like a cake. At the top sits the clear coat, a glossy protective layer with no colour. Below that is the colour coat, then the primer, and at the very bottom the bare metal.

Run your fingernail gently over the scratch. If your nail catches, the scratch has gone through the clear coat. If you feel nothing, the damage is only in the outermost layer.

The more layers the scratch has broken through, the more expensive the job will be.

Scratch only in the clear coat

This is the mild version. A superficial scratch can often be polished away, because you buff off a hair-thin layer of the clear coat around the mark until the surface is smooth again. A workshop typically charges 500 to 1,500 kroner for polishing a smaller area.

Scratch down to the colour coat or the metal

If the scratch has reached the colour coat or gone all the way to the metal, no amount of polishing will help. The panel then needs to be filled, primed, painted, and finally coated with clear coat again. Expect 3,000 to 8,000 kroner for one panel — that is, one door or one wing section.

If the damage spans several panels, you multiply that figure. A streak along the entire side of a car can come to 15,000 to 25,000 kroner.

What drives the price up

  • The colour. Pearl and special metallic colours are harder to match exactly and often require an extra coat of paint.
  • The location. A scratch in the middle of a flat door is simpler than one that sits in a crease, near a handle, or close to a trim strip.
  • The car model. Newer cars have sensors and cameras in bumpers and mirrors that need to be handled with care.
  • The blend. To make the repair invisible, the workshop must blend the new paint gradually into the old on the neighbouring panel.

Should you fix it yourself

Shops sell touch-up pens and repair kits for a few hundred kroner. On a small stone chip they can work fine, especially if you just want to prevent rust and don't mind the mark being visible up close.

On a visible scratch on the door, the result is rarely good. The colour never quite matches, and the surface ends up uneven. You have spent money and time, and the workshop will have to do the job properly afterwards anyway.

One benefit of NAF membership is that you can get advice on what makes sense before you decide. See NAF for more about car ownership and maintenance.

Should you use your insurance

This is where many people pause — and with good reason. A comprehensive insurance policy usually covers paint damage, but you pay the excess yourself. The excess is your share of the bill before the insurance covers the rest, and it typically sits at 4,000 to 8,000 kroner.

If the repair costs less than your excess, there is no point in making a claim. You will end up paying everything yourself anyway, and you risk losing your no-claims bonus on top of that.

Calculate your excess against the repair cost before you report the damage. Terms vary between insurers, so check your own policy. Finance Norway has an overview of how car insurance works in Norway.

If you know who hit your car, it is the other party's liability insurance that should cover the damage — and in that case you will not have to pay an excess. You should then fill out an accident report together. With a digital accident report, you and the other party fill out the same form, sign digitally, and both end up with an identical copy ready to send to the insurance company. That removes any dispute about who wrote what.

How to find the right price

Two workshops in the same city can give very different quotes for exactly the same scratch. One says 4,200 kroner, the other 7,800. The same job.

That is why it always pays to ask several. Instead of phoning around and explaining the damage from scratch each time, you can describe it once and request quotes from several workshops in the area at the same time. You then receive non-binding quotes back, compare prices, and choose the cheapest or the one you trust most.

Take a photo of the scratch in daylight, measure it roughly, and note the car model and colour. That gives workshops enough to respond accurately.

A scratch in the paintwork feels worse than it is. Find out how deep it is, work out your excess, and get a couple of quotes. Then you will know exactly what you are actually dealing with.
